Christopher Dock, (born ?, Germany—diedSkippack, Montgomery county, Pa. [U.S.]), Mennonite schoolmaster in colonial Pennsylvania whose teaching methods gave rise to publication of the first known book dealing with education in America.

Drawn from Germany to Pennsylvania by the religious freedom accorded Mennonites, Dock opened a school at Skippack about the year. Christopher Dock (c ) was a Mennonite educator who worked primarily in South-East Pennsylvania. His teaching techniques stood in contrast to the norm of the day, and emphasized character building and discussion in lieu of physical punishment.

His legacy lives on in the Christopher Dock Mennonite High School, which bears his : $   The student of American literature, should he search through histories, bibliographies, and catalogues of libraries for traces of Christopher Dock or his works, would follow a vain quest.

Christopher Dock was a compassionate, 18th Century Mennonite school teacher who pioneered a shift in the philosophy of teaching by combining academics and faith. He emphasized character building and discussion to encourage a higher standard of learning.

Saur urged Christopher Dock to write a book explaining his methods. Dock prepared it aroundbut then, for twenty years, refused to allow Saur to publish it.

He did not want it released during his lifetime, afraid that it would look like he was trying to build a "monument" to himself. Dock Mennonite Academy Superintendent Dr. Conrad Swartzentruber has written a letter to Dock students and their families, the fifth in a series of communications the school is sharing over the course of the summer.

The J Superintendent's Letter includes some exciting news about the school year, including. a link to the school's Health and Safety Plan. The book is important not only for its description of Dock ’ s schoolteaching methods but also for what it reveals about colonial Mennonite family life.
